CBS 2 News Chicago – A Chicago teen paralyzed in a 2008 shooting got an after-school surprise Friday. CBS 2’s Brad Edwards has this follow-up report.
They came in the rain and gloom, to give Martrell Stevens what he really wanted: a basketball hoop. Martrell found out after returning home from school.
“When I saw you go out the front door, go backwards down those stairs, I said that kid’s a winner,” Bob Shea of Devices 4 the Disabled told Martrell, who has become self-reliant in his wheelchair.After seeing a recent report about Martrell’s story, the not-for-profit paid for the permanent hoop. Community activist Andrew Holmes enlisted the aid of a contractor.
“I was not expecting this,” Martrell said as he tested out the new hoop.
Unexpected things can be bad. But they can also be good.
Martrell says he plans to use the hoop frequently, but after his homework is done.
