The young man who is happily sitting in his new scooter, Herbert, was referred to D4D by our friends at the Center for Independence. Due to multiple physical challenges, it’s hard for Herbert to walk more than 200 steps. However, he was denied when he applied for a power wheelchair.
D4D was happy to work with Herbert’s physical therapist Maureen Michalski (also shown in the photo, as well as Bob Shea) to get him his new scooter. Previously he wasn’t able to go on family outings. Now he’ll be able to accompany his family to the forest preserves and to pick apples with them in the fall because the scooter is able to roll over grass as well as paved surfaces. His horizons have been dramatically expanded.
