A Father’s Love

If you’ve ever had the opportunity to visit Devices 4 the Disabled during a clinic day, you know it can be busy and sometimes chaotic. Between the scheduled appointments to pick up equipment and the people dropping off donations, we also have walk-ins – people who come in just to say “hi” and connect with a supportive community, others wanting to learn about available resources, or others seeking specialized equipment. Amidst the typical bustle of the clinic day, Estevan arrived to D4D, looking determined and showing courage as he sought help for his son, Mateo, the motivation behind his visit. The backpack he wore not only showed his readiness for the journey but also symbolized the heavy responsibility and dedication of a father willing to go to great lengths for his son. What followed was a touching story of community, compassion, and how D4D gives new life to equipment to help provide a better life for someone in need – the incredible lengths we go all go to help each other – a typical day at D4D!

We discovered that Estevan is a nurse by profession, where he’s used to caring for others and understands the obstacles people with disabilities experience. But navigating the system as a father seeking specialized equipment for his son, Estevan faced a different challenge – one marked by difficulty and high costs. He showed us videos of Mateo whose resilience and bright spirit were evident in every clip, reflecting a father’s deep love and pride as he spoke about his son. With hope in his eyes, Estevan was looking for a gait trainer that would help Mateo gain more mobility and independence – a pathway to greater opportunities and a better future for his son.

Emil, another father at Devices 4 the Disabled, empathized deeply with Estevan’s journey. Moved by compassion, Emil disappeared into the warehouse and returned with a suitable gait trainer. Then, recognizing that Mateo was facing a life-time of using mobility devices, Emil understood the financial and practical challenges of constantly acquiring new equipment as a child grows. With foresight and creativity, Emil went beyond to transform challenges into a meaningful solution and decided to modify a larger frame trainer, ensuring it could adapt to Mateo’s growth over time. Approaching the task with the care and dedication he would give to his own children, Emil made the adjustments to provide a gait trainer that would serve Mateo’s needs now and in the future.

Seeing the completed gait trainer, tears welled up in Estevan’s eyes – a mix of joy, gratitude, and profound love for his son. This simple device represented a future of possibilities, a beacon of hope, and a tangible piece of the future he dreamed of for Mateo. The connection between Estevan and Emil, forged through shared experiences of fatherhood as well as their roles within the disability community, epitomized the spirit of Devices 4 the Disabled – a place where love and dedication converge to make a meaningful impact on people’s lives. Estevan’s tears turned into a smile as he placed the gait trainer on his shoulders along with his backpack, ready for his journey and proud to bring the gait trainer to Mateo.

The clinic day is busy, but this is one moment among the many where strength, resilience, hope, and a father’s love prevail. What may appear chaotic is really a lot of love in action. It’s the dedication of people coming together to make a difference, the tireless effort to ensure that everyone gets the support they need, and the powerful connections formed through compassion and shared kindness.

D4D exists because of the barriers preventing access to much-needed equipment for so many. People do not come to D4D because life is easy. No, life can be hard, and for some it is even harder. Everyone at D4D works to overcome obstacles, to improve access for those experiencing exceptional challenges, and make lives better in meaningful ways. The dedication and effort of everyone at D4D ensure that people like Estevan and Mateo receive the help they need, turning what appears chaotic into a testament of love and commitment to making lives better, one step at a time.

Busy. Chaotic. Amazing. Mission-driven work making a positive impact – a typical day at D4D. If you’ve never visited D4D during a clinic day, please come by  We would love to see you!
